Description

Morocco is widely known as a year-round surfing destination. It`s true that there are waves all year round, but the best conditions are between October and March. This is when the strong waves of the Atlantic bring bigger and smoother waves. The weather isn’t as hot as summer, but it’s still warm and plenty of sunshine. Moreover, the beach is less crowded. Spring is a little unstable, but summer has periods when the waves are flat. Beginners can always enjoy surfing in Morocco. With numerous protected surf spots, beginners can find rapids and small waves all year round. However, waves are much calmer in spring, summer and early fall. For experienced surfers, the winter months bring big games. The wind is not very strong all year round and almost always blows offshore. Mornings when the waves are very grassy are the best times to surf in Morocco.. The water begins to warm in May and cools in October. A 2 mm shorty is required for summer and autumn. If it’s windy or you’re going surfing early in the morning, you may need a 3/2 mm wetsuit. Wear a 4/3 mm wetsuit in winter. Outside the water, you can cool off in a bathing suit on the beach even in winter. There are surf spots all over the Moroccan coast, but the coastline between Essaouira and Agadir is dotted with everything from powerful spots, gentle rollers and crashing waves.
A short drive north is Taghazout, Morocco’s surfing capital. The best surf spots in Taghazout for beginners are Panorama Point, Hash Point and a Source. But there are names on everyone’s lips, like Anchor Point and Killer Point, Morocco’s most famous waves. They can hold some gnarled barrels when firing. Even if you can’t try it, you should see both. South of Taghazout Straight is Tamraght, a small fishing village with a burgeoning surf scene. Known for its many banana plantations and its two famous surf breaks at Banana Point and Devil’s Rock. Great waves for all levels in a less crowded setting than Taghazout. Also, Essaouira area is a great destination for beginner surfers. Essaouira is well known for being windy and is a popular destination for kite surfers. Once the wind subsides, there is also a beach break for beginners. Sidi Kauoki, south of Essaouira, has a wide variety of waves and is a great place to learn to surf and improve your skills.
